Success isn't just about finding answers. Sometimes, it's about earning the privilege to ask a different question.
When we're starting out, we often think of just one question: How do I earn more?
For many of us, this question drives our early years. We work hard, pursue opportunities, and take risks. We mostly think of ourselves: having a better lifestyle, earning and eating well, traveling perhaps.
But over time, I've noticed that success changes the questions we ask. At some point, earning more is no longer the only thing that matters.
The question becomes: How do I protect what I've built?
A career becomes a source of security for a family. A business becomes a source of livelihood for employees. Savings become future opportunities for children — and we want to make sure they benefit from that.
“What was once a personal goal becomes a commitment to our loved ones.”
What was once a personal goal becomes a commitment to our loved ones. We realize that building wealth is the journey. Preserving it becomes just as important.
Then, if we are lucky, life is generous enough that we get to ask a third question: How do I leave a legacy?
A simple desire to know that the people we love will continue to be cared for. That the opportunities we've created will not disappear overnight. That what we've spent years building can continue to exist beyond our lifetime.
Maturing Into the Practice
I've come to appreciate that being able to ask all three questions is a privilege. The first is about earning. The second is about protecting. The third is about leaving a legacy.
As we mature, our focus naturally expands beyond ourselves. Each question represents a different stage of growth.
“The ability to ask all three questions isn't merely a measure of success. It's a reflection of how many people now matter to us.”
The Privilege of Asking All Three
Not everyone gets the opportunity to ask all three questions.
An unexpected illness, accident, or loss can change the course of a family's future.
That's why protection matters.
Life insurance allows us to keep moving forward at every stage of life. It gives our families, our businesses, and the people we care about the chance to continue even when life takes an unexpected turn.
Perhaps that's what planning is really about.
“Not predicting the future. But protecting and ensuring the possibility of it.”
So my hope is simple: May we all have the privilege of asking all three questions. And as always, deeply honoured to be part of your journey.
